Gressley of the American Heritage Center has mounted a serious effort to save manuscripts and books belonging to members of the 20th-century engineering community. However, the books can be of great value to the American Heritage Center, The University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wy. Now that I am in the twilight of my career, I would hate to see them destroyed. I used these handbooks in my profession and treasure them. To my knowledge, the only company still in business is Bethlehem Steel. Q – During the past years, I have collected quite a few structural steel handbooks, among which are handbooks from the Carnegie Steel Co. McClurg in 1914 and having no acorn on the spine, is priced at $200. In contrast, a first edition of “Tarzan Of The Apes,” published by A.C. Earlier reprints fall in the $8 to $15 range. Hancer prices late Grosset & Dunlap reprints at $5 each. Mandeville’s “The Used Book Price Guide, 5th Edition” (Price Guide Publishers, 1972) shows that Metropolitan Books did publish the first edition of “Tarzan At The Earth’s Core.” The editors value a Tarzan “At The Earth’s Core” (published in New York circa 1930) at $30. Information on several Burroughs’ books appears in “Old Books: The Standard Value Guide, Second Edition” (Collector Books, 1979). I do not own Zeller’s book hence, I was not able to check it. There were no price listings for Edgar Rice Burroughs’ books. I checked the House of Collectibles’ “The Official Price Guide To Old Books & Autographs, Seventh Edition” (1986) and Leslie Zeller’s “Book Collecting.” Neither had any listing for Edgar Rice Burroughs or his books. Q – I own three Tarzan books written by Edgar Rice Burroughs: “Tarzan Of The Apes” (Great Britain, Grosset & Dunlap, 1914), “Tarzan And The Golden Lion” (Great Britain, Grosset & Dunlap, 1923), and “Tarzan At The Earth’s Core” (New York, Metropolitan Books Inc., 1929-30).
